Why Are my Scanned Negatives Blurry or Pixelated?

How negative scanning works

When you scan a negative with Photomyne, the app uses your phone or tablet camera to photograph the tiny image on the film. Because negatives are small and detailed, the camera needs the right distance and focus to capture them clearly.

Common reasons scans look blurry or pixelated

1. The camera is too close or too far

Your camera needs the negative at just the right distance to focus sharply.

What to do:

  • Move the phone slowly closer or farther until the negative looks sharp on screen.
  • Don’t move too close — the camera may lose focus.

Small adjustments often make a big difference.

2. Not enough backlight behind the negative

Negatives are meant to be viewed with light behind them. Weak or uneven light makes it hard for the camera to capture detail.

What to do:

  • Use a bright, even backlight (a lightbox, slide viewer, or bright screen).
  • Make sure no shadows fall on the film.

Good light makes scanning much more successful.

3. Your phone moved while scanning

Even a small shake can make the image soft or blurred.

What to do:

  • Hold your phone with both hands.
  • Rest your elbows on a table.
  • Take your time and aim for a steady capture.

Stabilizing your hands helps dramatically.

4. The negative itself is worn or scratched

If the original negative is damaged, faded, or grainy, the scan may reflect that.

What to do:

  • Gently clean the negative with a soft cloth before scanning.
  • Try scanning a different negative to compare.

How to improve clarity step by step

  • Position your negative with strong, even backlight.
  • Hold your phone at the right distance (not too close).
  • Let the app focus before capturing.
  • Keep your phone steady while scanning.
  • If your phone won’t focus, move it slightly back and forth until the image sharpens.

Small changes in distance and lighting can make a big difference.

What’s normal to expect

  • Some grain or softness is normal — especially with older film.
  • Newer phone cameras tend to capture better detail.
  • Perfect ultra-high-resolution scans are limited by the original negative and your device’s camera.
