Behind this mural at URI Student Union is a stairwell where I first laid eyes on Miss E V Holmes. It was a Friday afternoon around 3-4 pm of September 1959 (my Freshman year). I was having a hamburger at the Student Union when my friend Juan came by to ask if I wanted to rush his fraternity. SAE was having a Rush Party for potential pledges that evening but it was required that I bring a date. Being that I only had something like only 3 or 4 hours before the event, I finished my meal quickly and went looking for a date. As I headed upstairs I bumped into a group of ten or so freshmen coeds coming down the stairwell. Fortunately I knew one of them, (a girl everyone called “Scratch”) who introduced me to the group . Miss E V Holmes stood out among the large group with her blue eyes and matching sweater. I could not keep my eyes off her. She was introduced to me as VALERIE (what an unusual and beautiful name I thought). I asked Valerie if she would like to go with me to the SAE Rush Party that evening. After an anxious and embarrassing moment that seemed like an eternity, coaxed by her friends, Valerie responded me with a YES! …and the rest is history (we were married 2 weeks after our graduation in 1963).

In the Dutch East Indies long service leave (up to 2 years!) in the ‘Mother country’ was a standard entitlement for public servants. This photo depicts my grand parents, my mother (the child on the right hand side), her elder sister + some unidentifiable relatives relaxing on the beach in front of the Grand Hotel (Scheveningen) in the summer of 1906.
